Larson Tops High Limit Foes In Duel At Davenport

DAVENPORT, Iowa (June 1, 2026) – Kyle Larson got back to form Monday night at Davenport Speedway, winning in a race car for the first time in a month by topping the Iowa Lottery Duel at Davenport with Interstate Batteries High Limit Racing.
Larson stopped the bullet train that is Aaron Reutzel and the Ridge & Sons Racing No. 87, sliding past Reutzel in turn three following a lap-seven restart and pacing the remainder of the 30-lap Roto-Rooter Midweek Series feature at the quarter-mile bullring.
In the end, Larson wheeled the Silva Motorsports No. 57 to a dominant 3.275-second triumph over Pennsylvania’s Brent Marks for his third High Limit win of the season and the 12th of his career.
It gave the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and Elk Grove, Calif., native his first trophy of any kind since winning the May 2 NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series stop at Texas Motor Speedway.
“It was crazy. Definitely technical out there,” said Larson, who climbed atop the wing of his sprinter and gave a celebratory bow to the raucous crowd – a nod to the late Kyle Busch, one of Larson’s longtime rivals in NASCAR competition.
“My car, I recognized it was pretty good early on. I was able to kind of shoot the middle to get by [Brent] Marks and Brady [Bacon] the first lap or two, and then kind of paced Aaron before we had the caution,” Larson recalled. “I was honestly surprised he chose the bottom [on the early restarts] for the grip that was there was up top at that point. I thought for sure he would choose the top.
“But I got to restart there and threw some stuff at him … and had a lot of fun there.”
Notably, Larson’s victory Monday night came in the first national touring sprint car event at Davenport since July 10, 1996, when Stevie Smith won against the World of Outlaws at the Hawkeye State facility.
Larson’s total winner’s prize was $14,500, which included a $2,500 bonus for winning from third starting spot after the Durst Dice Roll by a lucky fan landed on a three prior to the feature push-off.
A 20-lap green flag run ended the main event, but prior to that stretch, four cautions dotted the first third of the race and further shook up the championship pursuit for one of its prime contenders.
Austin McCarl slowed to a stop on the frontstretch with five laps complete, moments before Reutzel was set to enter traffic after starting from the pole and easily leading the early going.
That set up a pivotal lap-six restart, where Reutzel got the best of Larson – who’d gained a place from third to second at that point – but chaos unfolded behind them.
Tanner Thorson clipped a turn-four tractor tire and flipped the Rod Gross Motorsports No. 88 ending the sixth rotation, causing terminal damage and leaving the Minden, Nev., native with his fourth straight finish outside the top 10.
Thorson was scored 23rd in the final results and fell even further in the point standings because of his second straight DNF.
One more restart followed, which saw J.J. Hickle drive off the banking in turn one and spin, before Larson sliced from high-to-low on Reutzel exiting turn two on the lap-seven green to make his winning move.
From there, the final slowdown occurred on lap 10 after the damaged Buch Motorsports No. 13 of Tanner Holmes slowed to a stop from 16th place.
Larson had firmly established control of the race by that point, however, and nothing Reutzel could muster stopped him from driving away when full-speed conditions returned for good on lap 11.
The man on the charge behind Larson was Marks, who went three-wide to the middle to pass both Reutzel and Gio Scelzi in turn two on the 12th lap, securing second place before chasing Larson the rest of the way.
Marks’ runner-up effort marked his second such finish in a row with High Limit Racing, a needed step in the right direction for the Myerstown, Pa., veteran.
Scelzi completed the podium in the Spire Motorsports, Chili’s Bar & Grill No. 77, followed by Brady Bacon and defending High Limit champion Rico Abreu.
Reutzel faded to seventh, but maintained a seven-point edge on Abreu in the updated High Limit standings heading to the tour’s next race on Wednesday, June 3 at Red Cedar Speedway in Menomonie, Wis.
