Robinson Starts 2024 Season With Three Top Fives, Preparing For Mildenhall Dirt Race
TELFORD, SHROPSHIRE – Finn Robinson, 20, of Telford, Shropshire started his 2024 UK Modified racing season with a win, a second, and a fourth in his three events at Hednesford Hills Raceway, located in Cannock, West Midlands. Robinson’s opening-round success means he is off to a strong start in his quest to win the UK National Championship in his division and the asphalt championship as well.
Starting from third position in his first heat race, Robinson quickly moved into second but struggled early in the race with traction due to the wet conditions. Once he got some temperature into his tires he chased down the leader, getting to his bumper with three laps to go.
“I tried to make a move to the outside, and we drag-raced to the line for the win,” he said. “I was told at first that I finished second but after some time I was awarded the win at the line by just 24 thousandths of a second!”
The second heat saw Robinson’s sharp-looking No. 24 again starting third. He got to second and chased down the leader, drawing inside of him twice. The leader cut him off both times, resulting in slight contact. Finn finished second.
“I couldn’t make up the lost ground after the contact,” he explained. “But second was still a good finish and I turned the fastest lap of the race, and ultimately, of the day, in that event as well.”
Now it was time for the 15-lap main event. The teams have the choice of racing on slick tires or grooved tires (known as “wets”). Robinson chose slick tires.
Then he went out on the track and…it started raining – hard.
“I should have consulted a weatherman before I made that choice,” the driver said with a laugh after the race. “Once it started raining, I obviously had a really hard time controlling the car through the corners. It wanted to go straight into the corner and then I’d get to the throttle, and it would break loose coming out of the corners. Even gentle brake pressure would lock up the tires, so I just went into survival mode and finished fourth. Some days you take what the track gives you. Today was one of those days. I wish it would’ve stayed dry just a little longer for the feature there so we could have one last good blast. The car was spot on. I’m really happy to hit the ground running in the opening round of the season and can’t wait to see what’s in store for the new dirt car’s debut when we get to Mildenhall Stadium.”
Robinson and his team acquired a second car to add to the stable for 2024, giving them a car for asphalt and one for dirt. The plan was to have the newer car, which will be the dirt track car, finished for this weekend’s Mildenhall Stadium event, but if they weren’t able to make that happen, they will make the necessary changes to their asphalt car and chase the checkered flag!
Round 2 and 3 at Mildenhall Stadium on April 6th and 7th
