Dave Danzer Wins 67th Annual Budweiser International Classic When Barnes Runs Dry
OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Team SWN Story and Photo -- The 67th Annual Budweiser International Classic 200 almost saw Dave Danzer tie Jimmy Shampine by leading all 200 laps. Then Michael Barnes passed him and led until the last lap when...
He ran out of fuel.
For the second straight year.
Danzer and three more cars drove by the suddenly limping Barnes, and it was Danzer getting his first ever Classic victory!
Barnes and Danzer led the 31 car field to the green for the 200-lap affair.
Brian Osetek had problems with his No. 75 before the start and went to the pits. He was scheduled to start 23rd. He came back out at the back of the field.
Danzer grabbed the early lead, but the race was just two laps old when a multi car crash happened in turn four.
Mark Sammut, Brian Osetek, Jerry Curran and Russ Wood were all involved. Curran and Sammut were able to restart.
Caution laps count in the Classic until lap 190, so the race, so the restart took place on lap ??? with Danzer, Barnes, Allison Sload, Danny Connors and Tyler Thompson in the top five.
The race went green until lap 20 when Moe Liljie in the Soule Racing 32 slowed to a stop. Mark Sammut also went back to the pit area at this time.
The restart came on lap 23 as Danzer still led Barnes and Sload.
Otto Sitterly's flat tire caused yellow to wave again. The four-time classic champ lost two laps in the pits making the tire change.
Danzer, Barnes, Sload, Connirs and Thompson restarted as the top five on lap 33. Danzer opened up some ground for awhile until Sitterly spun out in turn two, slowing the field again.
Sitterly was leading the Challenge Series standings coming into the race, but now he was multiple laps down.
Danzer led the field to the restart on lap 47 and started to pull away again. Sload got by Barnes for second on lap 52 and set sail for leader Danzer. Barnes, Connors and Bellinger were now third through fifth.
A three-car melee on the front straightaway involved Aric Iosue, Lou LaVea Jr. and Joe Gosek, making his 43rd and, perhaps final, Classic start at age 67.
Michael Muldoon, Logan Rayvals and Sitterly all pitted under yellow. Muldoon and Rayvals made it out without being lapped.
The lap 74 restart saw Danzer still leading with Sload second.
19 cars were still running when 100 went up on the lap board. Danzer had led the entire distance. A caution right then brought the field back to a crawl. Ben Seitz had a flat tire and spun.
Danzer stayed out front over the next 25 laps while Dave Shullick made some moves to climb to fourth, Camden Proud was in 14th until he exited the race, and Danny Connors brought out the next yellow on lap 127 when something broke on his No. 01 and he smashed the foam barriers in turn three.
Lap 138 was an interesting lap for cars numbered 22 with drivers named Mike.
Midwest racer Mike McVetta stopped on the track on lap 138. He was pushed back to his pit area and out of the race. Mike Bruce pulled his No. 22 into his pit but he returned to action.
Brandon Bellinger slipped into the pits for a right rear tire change and got back out on the lead lap.
Danzer was still the race's only leader when the restart happened on lap 146. Could he lead them all and tie Jimmy Shampine as the only driver to do it?
On the restart Barnes started getting frisky and Bobby Santos was now fourth in the 3 Stooges Racing 01. Only 14 cars remained on track at this point.
With 40 laps left, Barnes charged back to Danzer's bumper.
On lap 166 "The Hustler" took the lead! Danzer, Sload, Santos and Shullick were the top five.
Lap 168 saw Tim Snyder spin his car and the yellow came back out. Bruce pitted under the yellow but returned on the lead lap.
Green lights came back on with 25 laps left. Who would cash the $20,000 paycheck?
Liljie spun the 32 right after the restart so Barnes had a few more safe caution laps to lead.
The top ten at this point?
Barnes, Danzer, Sload, Shullick, Santos, Abold, Bellinger, Ordway, Patrick and Bruce.
Restart came in lap 180. Two laps later Bellinger took his No. 02 to the pits for a time and returned laps down.
And then it happened...again.
Barnes ran out of fuel on the last lap for the second time!
Danzer got his first Classic win with Sload second, Shullick, Santos and Barnes finished the top five.
Wow.
